Dear Citizen of the Earth:
Thanks for visiting the Ken Baer for the Communities campaign website.
Life is more challenging than ever before. That is why we need a councilmember from the 33rd CD who is thoughtful, represents the interests of all the district's communities and who cares about the well-being of all New Yorkers. I will be a leader on environmental, educational, transportation and health issues — working for long-term solutions to the situations we face today.
All my life I've been politically active. Early on I understood that government actions at every level ultimately affect the entire planet. As Chair of the Sierra Club's NYC Group's Political Committee for over 10 years, we worked to elect only candidates with strong environmental credentials. I am an organizer and a fighter who used the prestige of the Sierra Club endorsement to further the Club's goals. I will apply these same talents and tenacity to moving the city forward on issues critical to all of us.
While chairing the Sierra Club's NYC Group in the early nineties, I worked ceaselessly to organize citizens against garbage incineration. From 2003 through January 2008, I served as Chair of the New York State Sierra Club. Through my leadership, the Sierra Club filed lawsuits with Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Defense Fund to stop inappropriate development. In 2006 I initiated the formation of a Sierra Club PAC to help change the leadership in the NYS Senate.
I've worked over the past 20 years on solid waste / incineration issues, protecting NYC's water supply, expanding and improving NY's transportation system, eliminating car traffic in our parks, supporting community gardens, advocating for cleaner energy and fighting ill-conceived development.
As a Democrat, I've been a proud member of both the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats and the Independent Neighborhood Democrats. I have supported efforts to elect progressives to office as well as to enact reforms in the way judges are elected.
I am an accountant who ran for the NYS Assembly in the '90s against an entrenched incumbent who helped obliterate a park to erect a parking garage, and who introduced legislation that would've allowed more smoking in restaurants. I am not reluctant to take on those in power or to fight for a healthier city.
Now I'm campaigning to represent NYC's 33rd Council District, so that I can protect lives and secure our future. It's my deep desire to serve you as passionately in elective office as I have on environmental issues over the years. Get to know me and find out what I want to accomplish by going to my bio and reading about the issues I believe are critical.
Thank you in advance for your support. Together we can make NYC a great place to live — for everyone.
In community and togetherness,
